Let's be honest, acupuncture makes a lot of people very nervous. When we were young, most of us received shots at the doctor's office and now the idea of needles makes us a little queasy. I don’t disagree, however acupuncture needles are much less scary than the hypodermic needles used for shots and vaccines. I can fit about 15 to 20 acupuncture needles into one hypodermic needle. Acupuncture needles are about the thickness of a strand of hair.
The first session with me is an information gathering session for both of us. Together we will address each body system, which will allow me to treat your symptoms more completely. This session is also a time for you to ask me questions and share your concerns about acupuncture. If the needles make you nervous, let me know. My goal is that you are as comfortable as you can be while you are here. We will also go over a few other modalities that may be beneficial to you including, but not limited to, moxa and fire cupping (Click Here to read more about moxa or Click Here to read more about fire cupping).
In your first full treatment, I do generally use needles - however, if you are still very nervous about it, we can start with some of the other modalities. I try to make the needles as painless as possible, however I am inserting a metal object into your skin, which is full of nerves. Some points you won’t feel anything, but other points you may notice a slight poke as the needle goes in. This sensation should dissipate very quickly. Once the needle is in, you may feel a dull or slightly achy sensation. If this sensation is too much, the needles can always be adjusted or taken out.
Once the needles are in and comfortable, I give you the space you need to relax. Generally the needles stay in for about 20 minutes, but can stay in for anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes. I usually leave the room during this time, checking in every 5 to 15 minutes; however, if your comfort level changes at any time, I do stay nearby and am always available to adjust or remove the needles.
If you are still nervous about the idea of acupuncture or any of the other related modalities, I do offer free consultations. I can show you exactly what everything is and answer any questions you may have. Generally people’s anxieties about acupuncture decrease after the first needle and after a couple sessions they are noticing a significant difference in their symptoms and love the time they spend in the treatment room.
